Katharina Grosse Biography

Katharina Grosse is a German visual artist whose innovative and expansive approach to painting has redefined the medium in contemporary art. Born on October 2, 1961, in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, Grosse has become known for her large-scale, site-related installations that transform spaces into immersive visual experiences. Her work is characterized by a bold use of color and an exploration of the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture. Grosse's early education in art began at the Kunstakademie Münster from 1982 to 1986, where she studied under Norbert Tadeusz and Johannes Brus. She then continued her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1986 to 1990, a time when painting was experiencing a resurgence in popularity just before the rise of the Becher School of photography. During her formative years, Grosse was influenced by the vibrant and narrative painting style of her teacher Tadeusz and developed a fascination with the unmixed palette, which would become a hallmark of her later work. After completing her studies, Grosse participated in several artist-in-residence programs, including the Villa Romana in Florence, Italy (1992); the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, USA (1999); the Elam School of Fine Art in Auckland, New Zealand (2001); and the Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco, USA (2002). These experiences allowed her to expand her practice and engage with different environments and communities. Grosse's work is distinguished by her use of an industrial paint-sprayer, which she has employed since the late 1990s to apply prismatic swaths of color to a variety of surfaces. Her approach often involves bright, unmixed sprayed-on acrylic paints, which she uses to create both large-scale sculptural elements and smaller wall works. This technique has enabled her to paint directly onto architectural spaces, landscapes, and objects, thereby challenging traditional notions of painting as confined to the canvas. Throughout her career, Grosse has maintained studios in Berlin's Moabit district (since 2008), Auckland, and Groß Kreutz (since 2020). Her work has been commissioned for various site-specific installations, including the Federal Labour Court in Erfurt (1999) and Gate 122 of Terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson International Airport. In addition to her artistic practice, Grosse has been an influential educator. She taught at the Weißensee Academy of Art from 2000 to 2010 and served as a professor of painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 2010 to 2018. Her commitment to the arts extends to her role as chair of the board of KW Institute for Contemporary Art since 2021, where she was part of the search committee that appointed Emma Enderby as the new director in 2023. Grosse's work has been represented by prominent galleries, including Galerie Max Hetzler (since 2022) and Gagosian Gallery (since 2017). She has previously collaborated with Johann König until 2022. Her art has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, and her pieces have been offered at auction, with realized prices ranging significantly based on the size and medium of the artwork. Grosse's artistic achievements have been recognized with several awards, including the Oskar Schlemmer Prize (2014) and the Fred-Thieler-Preis (2003). Her work has been the subject of major exhibitions at institutions such as the Public Art Fund, Nasher Sculpture Center, De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA Cleveland, Mass MoCA, and the Renaissance Society, among others. Grosse's practice is a testament to the power of painting to engage the senses and challenge perceptions. Her work invites viewers to experience color and form in new and unexpected ways, often blurring the lines between the artwork and its environment. As an artist, Grosse continues to push the boundaries of painting, exploring its potential as a medium for both personal expression and public engagement.
